The game is open to all ages but is mainly targeted toward children through its safe environment. What Can I Do in Club Penguin?
There is literally so much to do from just playing games, to solving different types of puzzles, many other rotating activities, or simply just chatting and socializing with other players throughout the game. You can also earn stamps and have snowball fights with other users on your server. The best thing about this game? It is a browser based game. Once you sign up and confirm your account through your parent’s email (or your own should you be of age), you can then use your newly created username and password to login from any computer, anytime, and anywhere. There is no installation required either, just head over to the site, login through your browser that has flash player installed and you will be right back where you left off last. This option truly makes this a great game to pick up especially as it does not need to be used with a powerful computer as many other games that require a full download to play.
For your first time playing, you set up your penguin choosing a name and color. The best thing to do is follow only with the instructions to get a basic feel for the game and where things are located. After that walk around on your own to get a feel for the layout and make sure you have mastered the controls for guiding your penguin throughout club penguin island. The game has a lot of life lessons that will help you though your real life as well. You need to learn to save coins to get the items you really want. Should you choose to get a pet (or the Club Penguin member limit of 75) you must learn to care for them or risk them running away. You must learn to prioritize your spending based on what you need and/or want. Can you get that new table or shirt with the last of your money or buy some food for your pets. The game is really a great learning environment for people especially children through finances as well as social interaction. Club Penguin has also put in guidelines to keep the chat safe, respectful, and clean of inappropriate words or behavior.
Starting with the reason that most are drawn to this game is the mini-games found in the rooms across the island. Each game type is different and challenging in it own way. Most games are available to everyone but there are select few that are reserved for those that chose to get a membership for the game. If you chose not to get a membership you will shortly find that the newer games tend to be members only as we as some of the more exciting and talked about games.
There are some great games which you can try. The better you perform, the more coins you will receive upon completion. JetPack Adventure is just one example of the games available through Club Penguin. You fly through the air on your jetpack, trying to collect as many coins as possible before you run out of fuel. There are fuel tanks floating from balloons on the screen which will aid in extending your flight time but make sure to watch for the anvils and other obstacles. Hitting one of these other obstacles will cause you to lose your gas level faster in your jetpack giving you less airtime to collect those coveted coins to buy that next item you have been eying.
Another game example is ice fishing where you have to try to catch as many fish as possible without hitting one of the many obstacles such as crabs trying to cut your fishing line or a shark trying to eat the fish you just caught. Again here you will earn coins based on the amount of fish you catch before you run out of fishing line. There are dozens of other game which you may be better at or prefer over one of these. The key is to find which you can get the most coins from the fastest so you can get all those items you want to show off to your friends. There are new games added frequently so do not forget to check out those new ones and mix up what you play from time to time. It may even help you develop a better strategy to earn at an even higher rate than you were previously.
Clothes are optional items that your penguin can wear. Most clothes can only be purchased by members, but non-members can still obtain some party items and unlock items from the Treasure Book. There are also a limited amount of clothing items that are open to purchase by nonmembers. Clothes can be bought in some catalogs, including catalogs that are available during special occasions. Hint, these are only available for a short time, so if you want them make sure to pick them up before the party ends.
Clothing items are stored in the player’s inventory, where the players can use items they have previously obtained, and wear other items. Members can have multiples clothing outfits saved in order to switch between them easier. You can easily remove an item by clicking the item on the penguin in its player card.
The igloos are the homes of penguins, namely where they live. In addition, any puffles you may have live there also. Igloos are basically your home. Players can decorate their igloos with many various types of furniture, as well as flooring, or even change the scenery behind their igloos. There are many variants of igloos as well but most of these can only be bought by members from the Furniture and Igloo Catalog.
However, there are still some items that can only be obtained from parties or by special codes. Some igloos are also available for all players but again a majority of the great items present in the game are only available to those who pay the extra for the membership. All players start with the basic igloo and can progress from there throughout the game by buying and unlocking newer items. Here’s a quick image of the igloo hall of fame:
Parties are island-wide events that happen pretty much every month give or take on Club Penguin. Each party is dedicated to a specific topic, sometimes the same exact topic which is celebrated annually such as Christmas, currently easter, or some other holiday. During parties, a large majority of the island is usually specially decorated for the occasion. The rooms have a special music to match the occasion, in addition to the occasional free items matching the party theme. Special quests tend to also be common. Mascots are also available to meet during some of the parties, and parties occasionally have special stamps which you can collect for completing activities in them.
Rooms are places in Club Penguin to which you can enter with your penguin character. Using the interactive map you can quickly travel from room to room to see what is going on or what is for sale. . There are many different rooms in Club Penguin, most accessible to both members and non-members. However like all other areas of the game, there are some secret rooms that only members can access. Those member-only rooms usually appear during parties or other special events rewarding those who are members with even more limited edition items. There are hundreds of different rooms available to visit for members but be sure to watch how full they get. Just like in real life, if a room is too full you cannot get in until people leave the room first.
Club Penguin even has its own version of pets available for players.
Puffles are small furry pets that are native to the island of Club Penguin. Puffles were first added to the game in 2005, and were first adoptable in early 2006 for a purchase price of 800 coins. The price has been lowered by a lot since then down to 400 coins for each puffle. Puffles are small, limbless creatures (they almost look like cottonballs) who eat Puffle-O’s and other foods native to Club Penguin. They have eyes and a mouth for which they can use for facial expressions.
Over the years many new additional species of puffle have been officially released and discovered by the users of penguin island. There are specific puffles that are only temporarily adoptable for a short period of time, usually the length of the party. There are many others that can be permanently adoptable by members and nonmembers as well. The pet shop is where you can buy a majority but just like other collectible items in the game, some can only be found during the seasonal parties or from completing specific quests. The best part for members? You can now have up to 75 puffles whereas the previous cap was much lower. By the way if you are not a member, you are only allowed to adopt two puffles and they can only be of the red or blue variation.
This is another area where members again win out for their monetary support of the game. There is also a backyard for your igloo where you can keep a majority of your puffle pets should you so choose. Just to give you an idea of some of the special puffle pets you can collect, there are you basic dog and cat creatures. There is a snowman puffle as well as a ghost puffle which were released during a Christmas party and a Halloween party respectively. There is also even an alien puffle that was released within the last year for a special occasion.
Each year there are Puffle Parties that have been held in early in the since 2009, usually between the months of February and April (there is one going on right now). Each puffle had their own special area during this time and many times new species are introduces to the members during this event.
Don’t forget puffles are just like real pets, they need to be taken care of. You have to feed them, from which you have many choices of food to buy. They also need to be played with. There are toys for this purpose of entertaining them. It is best to think of them as an actually real life dog, just without all the mess of potty training. They even need to be taken for walks. In this idea it is great because it shows children how to responsibly care for a pet without putting a real life pet through the negative consequences. Should you be a neglectful or forgetful owner your puffles will even run away for their owners.
Certain puffles can even help you in your mini games giving you a slight advantage. They can help you obtain bonus gold through their help. Each puffle has a different personality and style so players can find the one that fits them best. These are all the puffles that have been permanently or temporarily adoptable in order of discovery dates. A final perk for having puffles is that they can dig while you are walking around club penguin island. They can find you many different items such a bonus gold which you can use to reward them for their find.
That is not all club penguin has to offer. There is also story lines which you can follow along as well as side quests of sorts. There are currently 11 missions that you can do which all follow a plot against your main nemesis Herbert P Bear. Herbet is a polar bear and the main antagonist of Club Penguin. He first makes his appearance in mission 5 and from then on you will be fighting back against him to foil his dastardly plots. As a polar bear, he is one of the few main characters who isn’t a penguin.
Contrary to him being a polar bear, Herbert hates the cold weather. To further not follow along with actual polar bears, he cannot swim and is a vegetarian. Once he makes his first appearance in mission 5, you shortly learn that Herbert has been trying to take over the Club Penguin Island and in order to turn it into a warm island paradise. Something the penguin do not want to see happen to their lovely home. The developers have continued to add to this story continuously giving new content to users are giving them unique experience such as encountering Darth Herbert in the star wars takeover. The updates continue to push the story making it interesting for everyone, leaving them mixed between satisfied and wanting more.
Another side quest is that you get to be an agent should you chose to do so. Once you find them, the Elite Penguin Force also known as EPF is a special group of highly skilled agents that help keep Club Penguin safe. The EPF HQ is the EPF Command Room, located inside the Everyday Phoning Facility. Earlier there was another agency known as the PSA but its headquarters was destroyed years ago by an incident.
Aside from your mission quests to foil Herbert you can also check out various other side quests. You can check out the dojo where you can work your way through the colored belt system by facing off against users trying to complete a pattern to win the match. After approximately 8 wins you will be promoted to the next belt level. Once you get up to a black belt, you will finally be able to take on the sensei.
Should you be able to overcome him through your exceptional abilities you will finally be able to call yourself a ninja as well as be able to unlock some cool clothing for your penguin. But that is not where this side quest ends. Club Penguin in its usual fashion expanded the ninja role to become a fire ninja as well as becoming a water ninja. This can be done by playing Card-Jitsu and talking to the sensei in each of the temples. Again same as when you became a regular ninja, once you are strong enough and confident enough in your abilities you can challenge the sensei and in defeating him he will grant you a gem which will make you a true fire and/or water ninja. The depth in this game is truly amazing giving lots of added game time.
In addition to the other items, there are also stamps. Stamps are special rewards of sorts that can be collected to show off achievements. Stamps are earned by playing games and working as a team with other penguins. There are 4 levels of difficulty for stamps that are earned: Easy which are green, Medium which are yellow, Hard which are blue and Extreme which are red. As with all other items in this game, some are for all players and some are only for members. Currently, there are up to 352 stamps are available to be earned. There is a convenient Stamp Book which is used to collect stamps. Each individual penguin has their own Stamp Book. Members are able to customize the cover of their Stamp Book, and are able to edit the color, highlight, pattern, and icon. Members are also able to display your favorite stamps you have received. You may only display 6 stamps and pins on the cover of your Stamp Book at one time. Stamp Books for other penguins can also be accessed, allowing penguins to show off their stamps. Most penguins use this feature to show the nearly impossible to get stamps they have earned highlighting their most glorious accomplishments that others have not done.
Benefits of Being a Club Penguin Member
Being a member certainly has a lot of perks. This is not your usual game upgrade where free members can eventually save up to get items that members can get. As a member, you are privileged to get or be able to buy special items that nonmembers cannot get in any way. In addition, as stated earlier, you can have multiple igloo configurations save as well as more than one igloo. This allows you to show off all of your stuff instead of keeping most of it in storage till the next time you decide to redecorate. You can also have up to 75 puffles whereas nonmembers can only have two. Careful though, you still have to feed and care for each of those pets should you choose to have so many. Finally, you get access to exclusive games and new content first. During parties you have items that only you can unlock for a limited time and rooms you can enter in order to obtain more goods to fill your chests.
Just when you thought all of these perks were great, it still gets better. Club Penguin is continuously adding new content to make sure that your game experience never gets stale. Not just items like clothing and igloo decorations, but new mission and side quests to give you many hours more of gameplay. During just this last month they have added dozens of new puffle pets as well as continued to update us on the dastardly plots of Herbert.
Membership costs $7.95 a month if paid on a month to month basis. Should you pay for a few months in advance, you can get a discounted rate for your membership. There are two options for getting this lower rate. Paying for three months at a time which costs $19.95, a per month value of $6.65. The third and final option is to pay for six months at a time which costs $39.95, a per month value of $6.65 as well. So if you see yourself playing this game at least three months from now, at least, go with the three month plan as you will save yourself a few bucks. Do remember though that all payment options are recurring payments and will automatically renew your membership unless you chose to cancel. This is very important to remember should you find yourself not playing the game anymore. The better way to address this would be to buy a Club Penguin gift card through the website which will give you a code delivered through your email that never expires, which you can apply to your account to gain all of those great membership perks. You can also find membership cards in stores such as Target and Walmart which work in the same way.
Parents even have some great controls when they let their kids sign up. Not only is club penguin designed to be one of the safest game sites for children to interact with others through their unique chat features but it also allows you to control how much time they spend on the game. It makes it much easier to enforce time limits when the game simply logs them out when they have used their alotted time. This process avoids a lot of headaches with getting kids to do other activities. The game was originally designed to be geared toward having great child safety build into the game. The offer an ultimate safe chat on specific servers. This chat only allows users to choose from a list of common phrases to use to communicate with one another. The new chat tool includes only phrases that have been approved by monitors. Some 300,000 of the most used phrases were mined from chat logs to create the approved list; kids can use these words and phrases in so many combinations that it should not feel limiting. The end result is that kids are safer but still have more opportunities for real conversation than with highly scripted chat. Should what you want to say not be listed you can still submit it but it will require approval from a moderator before any other users can see what you type. Moderators are also continuously patrolling the game making sure everyone is having a safe and enjoyable experience.
Without being a member, you are really missing out on a lot of features within the game. You cannot get the full experience without paying the monthly membership. There are so many games and other collectible items that you can only play and get if you are a member. There are ways to get free trials and months so keep your eyes open and some research if you want to at least just try out the features. If you really want to get into this game it really is a no-brainer to become a member. Once you try it for yourself you will never turn back to being a nonmember.
